Great Conversations and Great Podversations created in Louisville and heard Nationwide.
In the fifty-second episode of GREAT PODVERSATIONS, singing legend, RENÉE FLEMING discusses her book, Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness, with RICHARD POWERS.
Renée Fleming is one of the most acclaimed singers of our time, performing on the stages of the world’s greatest opera houses and concert halls. She is also a leading advocate for research at the intersection of arts, health, and neuroscience. Her new book, Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness, contains essays from preeminent scientists, artists, therapists, educators and physicians about the powerful impacts of music and the arts on health and the human experience.
The book is the latest milestone in a journey that began in 2015 and led to the first ongoing collaboration between the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the National Institutes of Health. A growing body of research shows music and arts therapies to be astonishingly effective tools for addressing a widening array of conditions, from providing pain relief, to regaining speech after stroke or traumatic brain injury, and improving mobility for people with disorders that include Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis.
Ms. Fleming is a Goodwill Ambassador for Arts and Health for the World Health Organization. In December, she was awarded the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor. She has won five Grammy Awards and has received the U.S. National Medal of Arts. Her singing includes momentous occasions from the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony to the Super Bowl.
Richard Powers is the author of thirteen novels. The Overstory was awarded the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. His works explore connections among disciplines as disparate as photography, artificial intelligence, musical composition and performance, ecology, genomics, game theory, virtual reality, race, biology, and business. He is a MacArthur Fellow, and a fellow of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Powers has won many accolades, including the 2006 National Book Award for The Echo Maker.
